Karen Metzguer Ms. Metzguer is a well known figure in Neonatology in North Carolina, having practiced nursing in the Tarheel State for 28 years. She is certified as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, was the head nurse of the UNC neonatal transport team from 1980-1984 , and transitioned the team from a physician-led team to a nurse led team during that time. In 1984 she became a Perinatal Region 4 UNC Neonatal Outreach Coordinator, and is currently directing the program. Ms. Metzguer is a Clinical Professor in the School of Medicine at UNC and remains passionate about creating systems and networks for families and health care providers that support best outcomes for babies who are born sick. When not practicing nursing, Ms. Metzguer is an avid birder, enjoys reading, cooking, gardening and the Smokey Mountains.
